BÄNDIESITTELYT

Disco Ensemble

The name that needs no introductions. The Band that feels more like home when performing at big arenas abroad. The Post-hardcore / punk-rock-phenomenon that everybody knows. Even you! It is inevitable that their increasing popularity emphasizes the gig's importance. Their endless success story hints that they might never play their cool set in a small town like Porvoo again. The band was founded in Pori in year 1996 and since that day they've come up with three albums. Second "First Aid Kit" sold gold last autumn! Today DE has a world wide license and recording contract with Fullsteam and Universal and this can only lead to world domination one day. The future world conquerors continue their musical crusade in Porvoo next February so it?s more that obvious not to miss this one!

Indica

Platinum certified super lovely Indica plays its gig and ends the entire festival on Saturday. It’s like throwing gasoline into flames when these girls come to the spot. The band started out in year 2001 and since then it’s been hailed to be one of the most energetic acts in Finland and known for their imaginative music. Indica has gained also international attention when touring with Nightwish around Scandinavia. Jonsu, Heini, Sirkku, Jenny and Laura get to prove to the Winterfest the fact that everybody already knew: Indica is something very special in Finnish music genre. Their fourth album came out last autumn and we get to enjoy this and older hit material at Taidetehdas next February when Indica plays their first gig of their 2009-tour!

God Damn Trio, GDT (SWE)

God Damn Trio a.k.a GDT started in 2006 and was formed by long time friends Kim Wennerström and Calle Bäckström along with Thomas Hellgren who Kim found at the University where they both studied. They recorded a demo which got great response and the song "Weak life situation" got airtime in nationwide radio. Since then they’ve been determined to one day claim the throne of being the 21st century’s best rock act! When being asked about the Stockholm based GDT sound the recipe is: Pop songs played with punk attitude with a rock sound. The best way to experience GDT is to see them live because GDT has arguably one of the world’s best rock drummers and the crazy guitarist Kim is known for playing with such power that it looks like someone has slaughtered a pig on his guitar at the end of the show. And if that isn't enough the ladies can come just to watch pretty boy Thomas sing his lungs out. The band’s really looking for a breakthrough and a record deal in the UK with the help of people that are affiliated with such bands like Motörhead.

Freepoint Crew a.k.a FPC

Freepoint Crew which originates from Porvoo and Helsinki was founded by mc Maz and beatmasters JMA and Mathias around the millennium. After ten years of hard work and tuning their sounds they have now reached unbelievable live performance and wicked sounds. Their latest record in 2007, “Tailor Made”, was positively accepted by Finnish critics and media and raised Freepoint Crew’s reputation on national level. Bands rise to fame is only beginning however, “The European Series” which was released through Dutch Dopeness Galore has been playing on radios all around Europe – with extremely positive feedback.

Conscious Youths

The Winterfest is proud to announce that the Finnish hip hop music pioneers will be attending at the event also. Redrama, Paleface and Mr. Singh will perform with a band of no less than nine people – gig will be so spectacular that audiences socks will spin in their feet for weeks after the event. Hip hop –genre has lately been moving towards egoism and other nonsense. Made from the heart and with original twist the music of Conscious Youths will be a counterstrike to all this self centered crap. CY if anything is always worth checking out.

Lapko

From Harjavalta to the wolrd! During its history that’s lasted around a decade Lapko has made itself to be one of the most promising exports in Finnish music. Nowadays the band’s domestic gigs are somewhat rare. Band’s music has changed from punk to explosive rock and this suits fine The Winterfest also. Along with Disco Ensemble (that’s also coming to WF09 ) Lapko boys have been touring the length and breadth of Europe and made themselves known for their madcap performances. Three albums, each a bigger success than the one before, have come out and Lapko’s now more current than ever. Malja, Nordberg & Heikkonen bless our festival with their presence and guarantee that everybody gets their groove on when Lapko hits the stage!

Airhead

Airhead, which won the Rock-tampere competition, will be the starting act for the whole festival! Energetic four-man squads music can be described as a fresh combination of Linkin Park and System of a Down. Despite Airheads five year history it is still quite unknown in Finland – this is a thing that Winterfest -09 will change for good.

Kemmuru

Aksim, Jodarok and J-Laini of the band Kemmuru are living legends in the finnish Hip hop scene. Aksim for example has among others worked alongside Fintelligens, Conscious Youths and Paleface. Group’s frontman, Jodarok, is one of the most productive rappers in whole of Finland and one of the most talented ones on the scene. J-Laini is active in his own sector – the famous Kovalevy-nights at Umo Jazz House and Kuudes linja –restaurant down at Kallio. Kemmurus debut, “Mite se teiä..?” was a success in the media and the next album “Kehumatta paras” even more – it won a lot of rewards including the ones from Basso-gaala and Funk-awards.

Giant Räbät

Few years back a band called Giant Robot won the Emma-award of Hip hop. Nowadays the band has a rap sideproject called Giant Räbät. Bands concept of organic hip hop (meaning that live band is playing the music, no dj or backtapes) will fit Winterfest-saturdays theme better than anything. They will shake Porvoo with a band of six talented musicians and rappers like Shaka, Jontti, Stepa (The hopper of the year 2008 –Rumba magazine), Soppa – also Jodarok will appear on stage with them.

JMZ

The gift from Porvoo to the world called JMZ published his anticipated debut album “GOTCHA!!!” in early 2008 via Edel Records. Since then folks have had their chance to enjoy this gentleman’s music even at the biggest hip hop-festival in the whole Scandinavia called Pipefest. This MC has pushed rhymes in English for years and has now a chance to prove with his band that even a smaller town like Porvoo can produce highly skilled rappers.

Friday night’s after party bands

Baton Rogue Morgue which represents the Porvoo’s old school genre comes to Donington after the official Winterfest-day comes to an end and Taidetehdas closes its doors. Baton Rogue Morgue’s recent album “Let the suckers bleed” guarantees that Friday continues to be hard as a rock. Proficient advocate of hard rock music brings the heat on after midnight and Adastra from Helsinki with Jyväskylä based Reprisal Scars are also having a gig of their own there! If you fancy a bit softer rock music it’s most recommended to attend Nevada on Friday. A band called Puolikuu is there this time they go by the name of Duo Kari Puolikuu & Luri Clifters! This one’s a true classic with a history of 12 albums and 20 years of musical career.

Saturday night’s after party bands

According to their own words, Killed by Stars declares to be a humantornado. The band’s a native one from Porvoo or actually Ilola and their music could be described as punk rock. The gig’s at Nevada 7th of February after midnight. What makes the night special is that this happening is also a KBS record release party! If punk rock’s close to your heart you could just regret it if you’d miss this one. At the same time Porvoo’s own boys Efu and Ola represent the hood as Näkökulma at Donington. This one’s for hip hop and their widely respected latest album guarantees a great after party for all those who tend to dig dope rhymes in Finnish.
